A month of Learning, Exploration and Fun!

Kia Ora! What a fantastic month it's been, filled with exciting learning experiences! We kicked off the month with the living eggs. The children watched in awe as the eggs hatched and the chicks emerged. They even had the chance to hold the chicks once they were two weeks old, before bidding them farewell as they returned to the farm. We were also visited by Old MacDonald's Farm, where the children got to interact with chickens, sheep, horses, and pigs. They were full of curiosity and kindness as they learned about farm animals and life on the farm. Our little chefs had a blast outdoors, whipping up pretend pancakes and muffins with their own creative recipes. They also expressed themselves through freehand artwork, exploring different textures and colours. The dinosaur enthusiasts gave their dinosaurs a bath, working together to ensure each one was sparkling clean. Meanwhile, our tamariki embraced nature, creating stunning crafts using leaves, flowers, and seeds to explore textures and patterns. In our health class, the children practiced yoga, mastering the Warrior and Rakau poses. They showed great strength and balance, learning how movement helps keep their bodies and minds strong. They also explored building new structures through creative play. We have been doing letter of the week and have been working on "D"! The children had fun exploring everything from dinosaurs to dot painting, enhancing their fine motor skills and reinforcing letter recognition. Our budding scientists were thrilled by the balloon-blowing experiment, where they learned about cause and effect by combining vinegar and baking soda to inflate balloons. Finally, our school readiness tamariki enjoyed practicing their caterpillar alphabet puzzle, matching uppercase and lowercase letters. They also made colourful bead necklaces, developing early math skills by counting beads and identifying shapes and colours. What a month of growth, creativity, and hands-on learning! Connections to Te Whariki (ECE curriculum) learning outcomes: Children are provided with an environment where: • They are encouraged to learn with and alongside others • They learn strategies for active exploration, thinking and reasoning • They develop working theories for making sense of the natural, social, physical and material worlds

Great start to 2025!

Kia Ora, Welcome everyone to 2025! It has been a wonderful start to the year with lots happening at Lollipops Newton. We started off the year with working on our philosophy and asking the parents input as to what values are important to them. The learning through play week was the highlight of the month. Each day was a focus on a different thing- splash day, creative day, active day, dress up day, nature day. Each of these days, learning experiences were set up which gave the children an opportunity to enjoy! We had big pools for splash day and our tamariki dressed in their swimming gear, excited to dive into the water play. Outside, they experimented with floating and sinking objects, sparking curiosity and scientific thinking. Inside, we brought *The Pig in the Pond* to life, acting out the story with characters, making it even more interactive and fun. On dress up day, the children dressed up in different characters and carried out their roles to perfection. On nature day, our Tamariki dove into a sensory-rich experience with rosemary, dried leaves in stunning shades, vibrant flowers, olives, and seeds. They got creative by using these natural ingredients to make pretend food and drinks, crushing rosemary to release its delightful scent, and taking in the soothing aroma. Our little artists embraced nature as creating stunning crafts using materials like leaves, flowers, and other natural elements. From delicate butterflies to imaginative faces, the creativity on display was truly inspiring! On active day, inside, our tamariki had a fantastic time solving mystery games and playing with skittles. The challenge and excitement of knocking down pins brought so much joy. Outdoors, cricket became a new favourite! Although it was their first time trying, with persistence and determination, many tamariki managed to hit the ball—ka pai! Not only this we also celebrated Chinese New Year with all our tamariki where they did the lion dance and enjoyed eating dumplings at lunch time. Our tamariki were fully immersed in the festivities, creating beautiful Chinese lanterns, colourful fans, gold coin envelopes, clay snakes, and vibrant dragon masks. We also incorporated Chinese culture into our mat time with stories, songs, and counting in Chinese. Thank you to Ariel, mum of Jayden and Kaikai, for leading a special mat time session. Your contributions added value to the day, and our tamariki truly enjoyed learning from you. Wrapping up the year! (1)

Kia Ora, What a month of celebrations is December! The children have been busy making Christmas decorations to adorn their rooms. There is a festive spirit in the air and the children are catching on to it. And not only decorations, the children baked gingerbread cookies, decorated their Christmas tree in the room and made special cards and gifts for their mums and dads. We had a fun puppet show for the children which they thoroughly enjoyed! The laughter of the children while watching the show says it all! After the puppet show we had the Christmas Party in the afternoon which was a big hit. All the parents enjoyed the concert presented by our children in their full volumes. Well done to all the children for expressing such confidence while performing! Then Santa arrived to give gifts to children which was a delight. Then we all had a very yummy afternoon tea with all the mums and dads. We also had a photo session for the parents which they appreciated. We wish all our families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!!! Wrapping up the year!

What a fantastic start to the month we’ve had with our celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights! The children had an amazing time singing, dancing, and creating their own diyas, which they later lit up, illuminating the space with joy. We also made some delicious sweets, which we shared with our parents—another lovely way to bring our community together. A special highlight was the photo shoot we organized for the children. They absolutely loved it, and we can’t wait for the parents to enjoy the professional photos of their little ones. Science continues to be an exciting part of our curriculum. The children’s curiosity was piqued as they explored the mystery of why pinecones open and close. This hands-on experiment was a great way to help them develop crucial skills like understanding cause and effect, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Another favourite was our sensory nature tray, where the children explored the textures, colours, and smells of various flowers and leaves. They observed how the changing seasons affect nature, sparking thoughtful questions and encouraging them to think critically. This activity also helped strengthen their sensory awareness, fine motor skills, language development, and understanding of mathematical concepts, all while fostering social interaction. Our balloon painting activity was a colourful and fun experience! As the children painted, they experimented with mixing colours and creating patterns, watching as new shades emerged before their eyes. This creative experience promoted not only artistic expression but also critical thinking, communication, and fine motor skills. In the babies’ room, we had a delightful gardening session, where we introduced the children to our newly planted carrot plants. The children were so excited to pull one out of the soil, eagerly exploring the carrot’s vibrant colour and texture. We sliced it up for tea, and the children enjoyed tasting the fruits of their exploration. This hands-on experience provided a wonderful opportunity for them to connect with nature and learn about where our food comes from. Our tamariki also had fun experimenting with different textures using gloop, playdough, and clay. They got creative making gingerbread men and even joined in the kitchen to bake cupcakes—a well-deserved sweet treat after all their hard work! Through these activities, the children are building connections, exploring the world around them, and nurturing their curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, all aligned with the principles of Te Whāriki. October Highlights: Learning, Play, and Celebrations

Kia Ora! It’s been a busy month at the centre with lots of exciting activities and experiences for the children. We’ve recently received a large shipment of new toys, bikes, and furniture, all of which the children have been thoroughly enjoying. They’ve been using the magnetic tiles to build different shapes and have shown great interest in exploring the insect specimens that came with the new resources. In addition, our family corner has been stocked with a variety of food items, and the children have loved cooking and sharing meals together! The children also had a fun outing to the local grocery store, where they explored the different foods available and purchased the ingredients needed to make a fruit salad. They carefully chose the fruits and counted how many were required, then returned to the centre to prepare and enjoy the delicious salad they created together. Another highlight was the “Walking Water” science experiment, which left the children in awe as they observed the process. The excitement didn’t stop there—we also baked muffins for afternoon tea, and the children had a great time both making and eating them! We had two wonderful celebrations this month: Halloween and Diwali. For Halloween, the children dressed up in costumes, and the over-2s enjoyed a fun piñata activity, where they had to bash the piñata to release the treats inside. The excitement continued with our Diwali celebration, where the children made and painted diyas and even prepared some sweets to mark the occasion. Be sure to check out the photos! As for the babies, they’ve been enjoying listening to live guitar music played by one of our student teachers. Dancing to the various songs has been a great source of joy for them. The babies also took part in the celebrations, with some watching and others joining in the dancing during Diwali. It’s been a wonderful way to start the new month!
